NECC Offers Basic Machine Training, Starting April 18th
Developed with input from local employers, Basic Machine Training is a 10-week non-credit program preparing individuals for entry level jobs in the region’s manufacturing sector.
Students complete the program with the nationally recognized NIMS certification as a Machine Operator Level I.
Manufacturing jobs offer some of the best careers in our region”, said George Moriarty, executive director of NECC’s Center for Corporate and Community Education. “Contrary to what many people think, manufacturing remains a strong part of the economy in the Merrimack Valley, which is home to a wide variety of companies, such as Raytheon in defense contracting, Magellan in aerospace, and NxStage producing medical devices.” According to a report released by Northeastern University, the Massachusetts manufacturing sector will need approximately 100,000 skilled workers to replace retiring workers over the next decade. These replacement workers will need to have the high level skills needed on the shop floors of today’s advanced manufacturing companies.
Northern Essex Community College Basic Machine Training Program includes topics such as blueprint reading, systems parts, fundamental coding, operation of CNC turning and milling centers, mathematics, applied geometry, and CNC tooling. The college’s 130-hour machine tool training program combines classroom learning with hands on experience. The 80-hours of hands on training are offered at Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School, NECC’s partner in this program.
